App Design
Context
Hamrovivah is a Nepal-focused matrimony app created for people who value traditional matchmaking practices involving family and elders. Unlike popular matrimony platforms used in India, Nepali users often prefer meeting potential partners through family discussions and offline interactions rather than purely digital connections.

The app was designed to act as a starting point for connection, helping people discover and talk to potential matches online before moving the process offline, where meetings are coordinated with family involvement and supported by the Hamrovivah team.
The Problem
While matrimony apps exist in abundance, most are built around individual decision-making and private conversations. This approach does not fully align with Nepali cultural values, where marriage is a collective decision involving elders, trust, and social context.

Key challenges included:
Hesitation toward using apps for something as personal as marriage
Lack of trust in digital platforms handling sensitive personal data
Fear of misuse, misrepresentation, or privacy breaches
Existing apps not supporting family involvement or offline progression

Users & Emotional Context
  • Caution and hesitation rather than excitement
  • Emotional sensitivity around privacy and identity
  • A strong need for trust and authenticity
  • A desire for clarity about what happens next
What wasn’t working in the Initial Design
  • The dark color palette felt heavy and uninviting, which did not support the warmth and trust needed for a matrimony experience
  • The onboarding flow lacked clarity, making it difficult for users to understand the purpose of the app and what would happen next
  • Low contrast between text and background reduced readability and made navigation harder, especially across form-heavy screens
  • The absence of icons and visual cues increased cognitive effort, as users had to rely mostly on text to understand actions
Research & Understanding
  • To understand the space better, I reviewed existing matrimony platforms and noted how they handled onboarding, profiles, and conversations. While these apps worked well from a functional standpoint, they often felt transactional and lacked cultural sensitivity.
  • This insight shaped a key design direction:

Hamrovivah should feel warm, respectful, and guided rather than fast or transactional.
  • The experience needed to explain itself clearly and reduce uncertainty at every step.
Key Design Decisions
  • Clear onboarding and verification flow

Personal details and documents were treated as private and used only for verification, helping establish trust early.
  • Profile structure focused on context, not just appearance

Profiles emphasized background, values, and basic compatibility over visual-first decision-making.
  • Thoughtful filtering and matchmaking

Filters were designed to help users narrow choices without overwhelming them.
  • Communication designed as a bridge, not an end goal

Chat features supported initial conversations, with the understanding that meaningful progress would happen offline.
  • Warm visual language

The color palette and layout were chosen to feel welcoming and calm, avoiding harsh contrasts or intimidating visuals.
